Socrates’ Fundamental Principles

May 1, 2007

These are the basic principles of socrates philosophy. I think they are simple yet complete. They embody the spirt of what is good in all mordern religions. Impressive.

  • We must always act on the basis of good reasons and good reasoning,
not out of fear, mere self-interest, etc.

    • We value the opinions of those who know, not the many (hoi
      polloi).
    • The principles on which we rely must stand the tests of time
and change of circumstances, and the conclusions we draw from them
must be ones to which we can be constantly faithful.
  • It is not enough to live; we must live well, i.e. nobly and justly.
  • We must never do wrong willingly, even in requital.
  • We must always keep our agreements, provided they are just.

How to Become an Early Riser

March 15, 2006

So if you want to become an early riser (or just exert more control over your sleep patterns), then try this: Go to bed only when you’re too sleepy to stay up, and get up at a fixed time every morning.

Pretty good advice on getting up early. I will try to do that from today. He claims that we can get a month of extra time every year if we sleep 30 min less every day. He slept 90 min less every day. Here is what I would do with this extra time:

1. Read more ( I have a ton of books i bought but have not read)
2. Learn the guitar ( I have a guitar but have never touched it)
3. Learn Spanish (always wanted to do this)
4. Spend more time with Mo (my son)

Steve Yegge’s essay about why one should write a blog. I am not sure why I want to blog. For me, its like writing a diary which I can go back and read after a while to remember what I was into. I have not been doing it long enough to see other benifits.

Vint Cerf: Don’t connect your fridge to the internet

March 8, 2006

“It’s easy to imagine that in the near future, your fridge will be connected to the Internet. So when you go shopping, it will send you SMS about what ingredients are missing to make that favorite Spaghetti meal of yours. […] However, your bathroom scales will be on the Internet, too, and will record daily weight measurements. Since it communicates with your fridge, it may as well put you on a diet. In fact, your fridge may even refuse to open the door. […] So we may not want to connect our fridges and scales to the Internet, after all.”
